‘The Stories that Bind Us’
About 100 pupils from (the current) fourth and fifth classes took part in an intergenerational project earlier this year. The project was organised by VMware staff (Ballincollig) and it was part of Age Action’s BIG (Be Intergenerational) Corporate Challenge. The girls asked their parents/grandparents for a story from past generations; they wrote the story and illustrated it. All the stories were published in a beautiful book called ‘The Stories that Bind Us’. (Amazon). There was great excitement when the finished product arrived in school. The book has a wonderful range of stories: stories that make you laugh and some that make you cry; stories of ancestors in far away lands and stories from the heart of Ballincollig. As well as the joy of seeing their work in print, there were bonds created with grandparents and other family members and curiosity for further story telling was aroused. All these fruits of the girls’ work will continue to inspire them and no doubt be passed on to future generations! A wonderful intergenerational project indeed!
