A team of nineteen sixth class pupils represented Scoil Mhuire in this year’s VEX Robotics competition in MTU (Munster Technological University) on Wednesday, January 18th. The competition comprised various tasks including building a robot, coding, driving the robot and a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) research project. The girls were joint winners of the award for the STEM project. The theme of the STEM project was ‘Maths in Nature’. The research team decided to base their project on trying to find a solution to the current housing crisis in Ballincollig with a little help from the bees! They took inspiration from the bees and their hexagonal honeycomb shape as a way to solve the current housing crisis by designing modular style homes which take up less space and are cheaper to build and buy. ‘Outside the box’ thinkers for sure!
Well done to the girls and to their coaches, teachers Orlagh Ní Lomasna and Lorna Ní Chonchúir.
