The green schools initiative by An Taisce encourages primary and secondary schools to be more environmentally friendly. You can read all the details on the Green Schools Ireland website here: www.greenschoolsireland.org

Scoil Mhuire became involved in 2010. We set up our first green schools committee with 2 dedicated teachers and many pupils -two representatives are selected from each class level each school year. There are seven themes in total and seven flags to be awarded for achievements in these areas. Each flag takes two years to complete. Each one involves auditing our current practice under the given theme, learning about how we might improve our practice in this area and then taking some action to improve our practice in creating a green code for our school. We continue to follow our green code for older themes. The committee meets regularly to plan and every class gets involved in the activities, competitions and special days. The Environmental Officer from Cork County Council, Dr. Mary Stack visits the school to evaluate our work. Most importantly we all do our best to be more environmentally friendly together.

So far, Scoil Mhuire has completed the first three themes and has been awarded three green flags. You will see our flags flying outside the school. You will notice that we continue to be careful about our litter, careful with our energy use and careful in our water conservation.

1st Green Flag – Litter and Waste – Awarded 2012

2nd Green Flag – Energy – Awarded 2014

3rd Green Flag – Water – Awarded 2016
